How do I ask about hiring plans?

Have been unemployed for a year and graduated school 2 years ago. Wanted to reconnect with some pe firms and investment banking firms with whom I had initial conversations some months ago and learn how their hiring needs are looking. What is the best way to ask this in an email without coming across as robotic or transactional? I haven’t done this before and don’t want to look like the pestering kid who reaches out every 2/3 Months asking for an update. Please share some input

I haven't been in your position, but I'd say just reach out to your contacts and let them know that you want to catch up with them. Then, either in your email or when you are talking to them, explain your current situation and express interest in their firm. They should point you towards the right direction at that point.

I don't think you'll come off that robotic since you've already had initial convos with these people.
