How do I get a Job

I have a 3.3 in Statistics at HYP. I worked at a small start-up during the summer, and they were not in a position to hire (they hire as needed) so I do not have an offer from them. I partied way too hard this month, and school is just way over my head now, and there's absolutely no way I can catch up, so I've decided to take a voluntary leave of absence for the year (or just the semester if that's better).

What is the best course of action if I want a job in PE, VC, or Hedge Fund?

1. Do all the big banks check your transcript before your internship, and how will they view a semester off? How will they find out that I took a semester off?
2. What should I do to improve my situation and get myself an internship for next summer and hopefully get an offer?

I'm not too sure about your first question but as for your second, I think you just need to be active before campus recruiting starts. You're in a great school (HYP), so your alumni network should be very useful.

My suggestion is to start getting informational interviews with alumni in the field you'd like to get into (PE, VC, HF). There are numerous posts on how to achieve this. But just to summarize start connecting with as many alumni on LinkedIn and try to request an informational interview with them. If LinkedIn isn't successful in getting responses, find out the firm's email convention that you'd like to intern for and email any alumni that work there.

You've got plenty of time to get started.

How poorly will my semester off be viewed? Is it expected that I tell firms I took a year or semester off, or will firms generally look at your transcript?

Start on the sell side.

Don't forget who you're competing against. You aren't up against state school kids where your name brand trumps all, you're competing against your classmates.

Apply yourself, start early. Academically, alumni and career services.
