ERGOHOCYou don't
WRONG

I did two part time internships and they thought I was in school (I graduated in December) and it freed me up to work full time while looking for a full time job.

All you have to do is offer to work part time - MM and boutique shops are good with this because they're usually staffed pretty lean and they will let you come in and help with the routine tasks. When I did this, I didn't realize the opportunity I had, but in retrospect, they would likely have hired me. Being near the city you want to work in is a big help, and if you end up working for free you can do several things at once because nothing shows up on your tax status: if you don't get good deal experience you can at least make the case that you're extremely hard working and good at multitasking and time management.

Being on the inside also lets you network just like you were doing the formal internship programs, and most people don't seem to care too much that you're not on the formal cycle. I don't know about BBs though, they seem to be more fixated on doing everything by the book. PWM internships are frequently part time during the school year, and I've roomed with guys that did this as well.

Get busy living

If you go to school in the NYC area then the logistics work out pretty well. Also you can time you classes so that they are all in the morning.
