How I Finally Landed An Interview

Ecstatic and nervous. This is my first interview and I can't afford to fuck this up.It's at a boutique Asset Management firm. Any tips are appreciated. For those who are still looking, this is what I did

Background :

Completely random state school (literally) 3.4 GPA Personal portfolio experience (small account) No previous internships No leadership positions

1) I googled my ass off. I called (NOT EMAIL) every single firm that came up. My pitch went something like this:

Me - "Hey I'm XXXX, a finance undergrad at university and was wondering if I could speak with anyone regarding any summer internship positions"

Them - "Hmm.. Sure, give me a second. I'll transfer you to XXXXXXX"

XXXXX - "Ya this is Name

Me - "Hey Mr.Name, my name is XXXX, a finance undergrad at university and was wondering if your firm is hiring interns for the summer. I make good grades and I'm really eager to gain experience this summer instead of taking summer classes"

At this point, they'll probably tell you they don't do interns or they aren't looking, but will keep your resume on file incase they decide to. Keep a list of all the firms you called, and which firms you left VM's at, which firms told you to call back, and which firms you emailed your resume to. Call back all the places you weren't able to reach yet. Send your resumes to the firms that gave you their emails. I didn't hear anything back.

I waited a month, and sent out a few follow up emails today. Here's the format I used :

Dear Mr. XXX,

My name is ----and we briefly spoke on the phone a few weeks ago about a possible summer internship. I was wondering if you had any updates regarding the intern situation. Since we last spoke, I was selected to help manage my university's investment fund next year and feel like the experience gained interning at your firm would definitely be invaluable. My GPA is decent, but I've worked really hard this semester and expect to make Dean's List again which should boost it to a 3.55+. If it's a payroll or workload issue, I'd be willing to work unpaid and/or part-time. I've attached an updated resume and hope to hear back.

I heard back within an hour. The firm that replied to my follow up email never replied to my original submission, so don't automatically write them off.

Good look bros

Just don't act like an ass-hat. Dress well, keep your answers in the interview short and to the point, be mature, be honest and just see what happens.

Since its wealth management, they're probably not going to hit you with any brainteasers. They might ask you some standard stuff - best to prepare (even though it is a bit of bs)

Time you failed Weaknesses Strengths Any time you took a leadership role Big projects you've worked on in the past

Good luck!
