How many internships is too many for FT recruiting?

Hi monkeys. I'm UK based and completed my UG last year. Have since done 2 summers and 2 off-cycles (mostly in alternative investments hence the lack of offers). Considering doing another off-cycle (IB) now instead of FT but at what point could people view this as a concern?

In theory, I could keep doing off-cycles until a msc in finance and then go full time?

Based on previous WSO threads, here's what you need to know:

  • Multiple Internships: Having multiple internships can be beneficial, but there is a point where it might raise concerns. For example, one user mentioned having four internships, with three being in investment banking. The key is to ensure that each internship adds value and demonstrates growth rather than just accumulating experiences.

  • Recruiter Perspective: Recruiters might view multiple internships positively if they show a clear progression and relevant experience. However, if it seems like you're avoiding full-time roles or unable to secure one, it might raise red flags.

  • Off-Cycle Internships: Off-cycle internships can be a strategic move, especially if they allow you to maximize preparedness, network extensively, and identify the right opportunities. However, it's crucial to balance this with the need to eventually secure a full-time position.

  • Long-Term Strategy: If you plan to pursue an MSc in Finance, continuing with off-cycle internships until then could be a viable strategy. Just ensure that each internship is purposeful and aligns with your long-term career goals.

In summary, while multiple internships can be advantageous, it's essential to demonstrate a clear trajectory and readiness for full-time roles. Balancing off-cycle internships with a strategic approach towards securing a full-time position is key.
