How much does your first internship impact your early career?

Basically the title. I've heard of people moving to FO roles after an internship in MO/BO. But I've also seen people with FO internships struggle to recruit for roles in their last year - to the point where they take a year out/apply for Masters.

It seems crazy that not getting the 'right' internship in my penultimate year could make things difficult for me in the future, but that's how it seems right now.

Would appreciate any insights.

Your first internship can significantly influence your early career trajectory, but it’s not the sole determinant of your success. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key insights:

  1. First Internship as a Stepping Stone:
While having a front-office (FO) internship early on can provide a strong foundation and open doors, it’s not the end of the road if you start in middle-office (MO) or back-office (BO) roles. Many professionals have successfully transitioned to FO roles by leveraging networking, skill-building, and internal mobility opportunities.

  2. Networking is Crucial:
A recurring theme on WSO is the importance of networking. Even if your first internship isn’t in your ideal role, building relationships with colleagues, alumni, and industry professionals can help you pivot to better opportunities. Networking can also help you secure interviews and bypass the traditional resume stack.

  3. Skill Development Matters:
Employers value technical and soft skills over the specific title of your first internship. Demonstrating that you’ve gained relevant experience, whether in financial modeling, research, or client interaction, can make you a competitive candidate for future roles.

  4. Resilience and Strategic Applications:
Rejection is common in competitive fields like investment banking or private equity. Many WSO users recommend applying to a mix of roles, including MO/BO and corporate finance, to hedge your bets. This approach not only increases your chances of landing an internship but also provides leverage when negotiating for FO roles later.

  5. The Long Game:
Your first internship is just one chapter in your career. If you don’t land the “perfect” role, focus on excelling in your current position, networking, and gaining transferable skills. Some users have even taken gap years or pursued master’s programs to reset their recruiting timeline and improve their prospects.

In summary, while your first internship can set the tone for your early career, it’s not a make-or-break factor. Strategic networking, skill-building, and resilience can help you overcome initial setbacks and achieve your long-term career goals.
