How to get interviews at RenTech, Jane Street, and Five Rings?

I'll be a PhD grad in a few months, and will be interviewing for quant dev/research positions starting next month. I've primarily worked with external recruiters who've set up interviews for me with most of the hedge funds already, but it appears that none of these sourcers work with RenTech, Jane Street, and Five Rings.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get interviews with these companies? I don't know anyone who works at these 3 places. Would applying directly on their website be the best option?

For Jane Street you will probably get an interview by just applying directly. It's been several years but it seemed like they would interview most people who was qualified on paper and then give brutal first round phone screens to filter people out. Maybe that's changed but it's probably worth applying.

I've heard rentech doesn't interview or hire many fresh PhDs. They prefer people with a few years experience in research labs or as assistant professors.

Sorry, I just saw this. I don't seem to get notifications about replies on this site.

Sounds, good I'll just try applying directly to JS.

Hmm, any reason why they prefer people who have experience in research labs or as assistant professors as opposed to fresh PhD grads? Why are the extra years of research (presumably in an area that isn't related to finance) favorable?
