To boost your response rate, here are some actionable tips based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Leverage Mutual Connections: If possible, mention a mutual acquaintance in your outreach. For example, "I just spoke to our mutual acquaintance X, and they suggested I reach out to you." This creates an implied recommendation and makes it harder for them to ignore your message. (Source: Should I get straight to the point in my cold email?)

  2. Personalize Your Outreach: Avoid generic messages. Tailor your emails to highlight commonalities, such as shared schools, interests, or career paths. The more personal and specific your message, the better your odds of a reply. (Source: 13 Networking Tips and Tricks)

  3. Follow Up Strategically: Persistence is key. Follow up once every month or two if you're actively recruiting, or whenever you have an update. This shows genuine interest and helps differentiate you from others. (Source: 13 Networking Tips and Tricks)

  4. Focus on Quality Over Quantity: Instead of mass messaging, prioritize building genuine relationships. A smaller, engaged network is more valuable than a large, unresponsive one. (Source: The Best Networking, Cold Calling and Cold Emailing Posts on WSO)

  5. Be Persistent but Respectful: Networking is often a numbers game. If you're not getting responses, increase your outreach volume while maintaining professionalism. Even with a low response rate, consistent effort will yield results over time. (Source: How to Network and Tips on Networking)

  6. Reassess Your Approach: Reflect on past interactions. If certain messages or strategies worked before, replicate them. If not, tweak your approach to make it more engaging or relevant. (Source: Networking 101 – 8 tips from a “non-target” school student)

  7. Show Genuine Interest: Relate to the recipient's story or achievements. People are more likely to respond when they feel a personal connection. (Source: 13 Networking Tips and Tricks)

  8. Track Your Efforts: Use a spreadsheet to keep track of who you've contacted, when, and what was discussed. This helps you stay organized and follow up effectively. (Source: How to Network and Tips on Networking)

It's not just you. I'm having a very similar issue. I'm having little to no luck with warm intros too. Some of them aren't even responded, even warm intros to fellow alum (being introduced to that alum through an alum they know well). Sometimes I wonder if people are just unnecessarily being dicks because they're looking out for themselves only.

Networking events in person though have been better for me. Went to one recently and it was amazing. Had some brief conversations with 2 interesting companies that I plan to apply / network with in the coming weeks. The problem is that very few companies are hiring at all sizes (startups to large corporates). And if they are, many of them feel like low quality roles given my resume / background.
