How to Knock Off the other Intern

So I am a SA in S&T and there is another intern competing for the same Sales desk in NY, he said himself we wanted to do Trading and not Sales, but that he'd take the job if he would get it. What can I do to get the job?

By performing the best AND making sure the FT's think highly of you by hanging out with them/cracking jokes/making sure they know your work.... knock him off by unfair means and itll come back and bite you, karma's pretty real

GSelevator style: As it relates to fellow interns, make no mistake about it – it’s war: -Let’s be clear. It’s impossible to compete with female interns. And it’s not cool. So don’t bother trying. -When a fellow intern leaves his desk, change his screen (or screens) to rolex.com, porsche.com, or morganstanley.com. -Come up with dismissive nicknames for fellow interns (Chico, Bud Fox, Fredo, Bubba, etc.). Hope that it catches on. -When a fellow intern leaves his computer unlocked at the end of the evening, change the signature on his Email settings. Using white font, add any variety of obscene words. No one will see it… except for IT and HR.

In all seriousness now, Fetter gave you a great advice

"When a defining moment comes along you define the moment or the moment defines you."

The intern who comes out on the other side being #1 in the eyes of all the analysts usually doesn't even have to deal with this kind of thing because he's that much better than everyone else. This is a #2 through #10 thing if I had to guess.

Provide added value. Pick your spots about asking questions. when your comp is bothering people with qs, find ways to relieve anyone on your desk from something that takes them away from making money (research, administration, etc).

When lunch time rolls around, you better the first person offering to take orders.

FTs remember the SAs that make their lives easier so they can focus on making money.

Combine that mentality with likeability and you're golden.

Lastly, worry about yourself. if you're doing the right things, there is no competition.

CHANGE YOUR AVATAR!

On a serious note, buy some really dank weed and slip it into his desk drawer. The smell with waft around the trading floor and before you know it you'll have that FT offer.

"Yes. Money has been a little bit tight lately, but at the end of my life, when I'm sitting on my yacht, am I gonna be thinking about how much money I have? No. I'm gonna be thinking about how many friends I have and my children and my comedy albums."

By whatever means necessary, brother. I actually cover this very thing in my book in the chapter "Broker Trainees Are Delicious." The difference is, I was up against 30 other guys and managed to pull it off.

While tales and battles of the older days are fun and good to read. Now, similar to those people who choose the spin class over a steak dinner I think that mentality would be very frowned upon.

You do your work, kill it and learn as much as you could. If you belong on the street and still finish 2nd I am sure everyone on your team will start to work the phones for you.
