How to make the most of an OR PhD?

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming PhD student in Operations Research (OR) with a background in Computer Science. I’ll be joining a fairly prestigious institution with plenty of industry projects. I’d like some advice on maximizing the resources available to set myself up for a career in the industry.

  1. Choosing a Domain: I'm still deciding which field to focus on but am considering career paths like management or tech consulting, quantitative finance, or working in a research lab at a tech company. Does the specific domain I focus on during my PhD significantly impact my future career options? E.g. how likely would I get a job in finance if I focus on supply chain during PhD?

  2. Research vs Industry Experience: Should I prioritize publishing strong theoretical research or aim to complete as many internships as possible to build industry experience/network?

  3. Skillset for Career Versatility: I’m thinking of focusing on stochastic processes and optimal/stochastic control, as these seem like highly versatile and valuable areas, and are also my main interests. Are there other combinations that could open even more career opportunities?

Thanks in advance for any insights!
