HSBC Group Interviews
anybody familiar with what they are like? this is not for IB.
got an interview with HR people I think with 7-8 other candidates all lumped together, and I think there are like 4 other different time slots. They said it'll consist of intro, and some activities and presentations that you'll have to do in order for them to separate you and see which ones they like.
My question is what exactly do we do during these, and what are some good tips and pointers to prepare in order to distinguish yourself?
thanks

When I had my group interview, we were taken into a conference room (there's food) and then given a schedule with who we're interviewing with and the time slot. It was mostly 1v1s but one or two 2v1s. After that, the presentation was basically a group project where they gave you a scenario and you have to come up with a way to solve it. All of our interviewers watched us. From MD to analysts, everyone watched. It was kind of awkward.
Other than the interview, the presentation is obviously one of the most important aspects. EVERYONE would try to take charge in order to show leadership. Everyone would just start arguing about the best approach. My advice to you to not be a leader or follower but a mediator, or facilitator. But never, in any circumstances be meek. Being the mediator, in my opinion, is the best way to go. Being aggressive/active is next. However, sitting there and letting others sling ideas out would be the worst possible decision for you. Always have a voice in something. Always try to contribute as much as you can without being overly "know it all".
As for trying to stand out, there really isn't an easy way. There will always be someone smarter or more social than you so don't try too hard to force it. Since you've made it to superday (or the second round I'm assuming) some banks are looking for fit more than anything. So try to click with your peers and the interviewers and you should be fine. Be yourself and don't be nervous. If you're an introvert....well just try to be social and talk to as many people as you can between your breaks, if you get any.
Take my advice with a grain of salt, b/c I ultimately didn't get the offer. It was pretty fun though, except it lasted six hours.
jesus, 6 hours? that sounds intense.
It was for S&T, unfortunately I guess I didn't do too well since I ultimately didn't receive an offer from that firm. Was my top too choice :( It was a good learning experience.
