I accepted two jobs offers. When do companies do background checks?
I've accepted FT job offers at two different companies (Firms A and B). I plan on going to Firm B but I haven't withdrawn my acceptance at Firm A yet just to have it as a back up if things go wrong. I interned at Firm A this past summer and I'm afraid Firm B will do a background check with them and find out I accepted an offer there. Is this something to worry about? For reference, these are business roles at two large tech companies.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, background checks are typically conducted after a job offer has been accepted. The purpose of these checks is to verify the information you've provided during the application and interview process.
In terms of your specific situation, it's important to note that background checks can vary from company to company. Some may only verify your education and previous employment, while others may also check your credit history, criminal record, and even your social media profiles.
As for your concern about Firm B finding out about your accepted offer at Firm A, it's not typically standard practice for companies to share such specific details about their employees or candidates during a background check. However, it's always a good idea to be transparent and honest during the hiring process. If Firm B were to somehow find out about your accepted offer at Firm A, it could potentially raise some red flags about your intentions and commitment.
Remember, honesty is always the best policy in these situations. If you're unsure about how to handle this, it might be worth discussing your situation with a mentor or career advisor. They can provide you with guidance based on their own experiences and knowledge of industry practices.
