IB vs. Accounting

Hello all!

I’m an incoming freshman at NYU Stern planning to concentrate on Finance and Accounting, also enrolling in the BS/MS accounting program to get my CPA in one accelerated summer. Currently, I hope to work at a BB IB

Reading a lot of forums, the perception I’m getting is that a lot of bankers quit after two years due to burnout. They pivot to sell-side firms, Corp Dev, or entrepreneurship.

My question is, would it be wise if I went straight into accounting after NYU rather than going into IB? The caveat is that I know I wouldn’t want to be stuck in IB forever. By doing the former, I gain experience straight away and can start my own accounting practice. By doing the latter, I get paid handsomely, but I may have to start from ground zero if I change professions.

Thoughts? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

You can always work at a big 4 firm in their transaction advisory roles. I know EY has their own investment banking divisions that you could hope to start at and then lateral internally should you want to quit IB. Lateralling within the same company is always easier than trying to convince a new company you would be a good cultural fit.
