Hello everyone,
I am a 24 year old student and of course I hate my current job. I want to become an Investment Banker after wasting 3 years studying Nursing. I wanted to know if you guys had any tips on school, coursework, etc. I encourage all onions related to entering this field whether they are good or bad. Imagine this... if you could offer any advice to yourself back when you decided this was the career path you wanted to take. What would it be?
I am currently working on my BA in Business with a focus on finance. I am not at a target school! In fact, its an online degree! I am a single African American woman who comes from the poorest of all poor backgrounds. Please feel free to be blunt and critical.
Your odds aren’t looking great. Given your unorthodox career path, you’d need a damn good reason to want to go into Investment Banking ... and I didn’t see any evidence of you having a reason in your post.
I would definitely temper expectations here. The odds of landing a decent IB job given your opportunity set are basically zero. Maybe shoot for a business/M&A brokerage to get your foot in the door? As the above poster said, it seems like you don’t have a great reason to want to pursue IB which is obviously something to think about as well

I think your first step is to get into a decent FT undergrad program and then leverage that network to get interviews.
It is unlikely you’ll get into IB from there, but hopefully you can get a decent finance job and if you still want IB, go to a top MBA program and you’ll finally have a real shot at getting into IB.
The people here are vastly underestimating how important your sex and race will be in recruiting. Recruiting while black or a woman is easy mode, and you check both boxes. Join a few clubs, study up, and you’re set. No reason you can’t work at a decent BB
I think you’re vastly overestimating sex and race. OP is going to an online school. You don’t even know her GPA.
