International Student - Offer Rescind?
Hi
I am in a weird situation where I am currently on a F1 student Visa, but will become a green card holder in 2026.
Thus, I’ve indicated that I dont need sponsorship to work in the US for a junior summer position at a firm that does not “sponsor visas currently or in the future” (cpt + 2 years of opt, then green card).
I confirmed this with my international student office, but I am worried that it may come across as if I intentionally hid my international status from the firm’s perspective when I request cpt authorization, and they will rescind my offer as “they do not sponsor” — and technically I dont have the green card yet.
Does this matter for a summer analyst position? How can I best resolve this?
They don't need to sponsor for a CPT. Sponsorship is only required for J1 visa and H1B visa.
You get the offer letter, give it to the academic advisor, they verify that it is relevant to your degree program and you can earn credits for elective course, and there is a website where you register afterwards.
I have heard people whose authorization did not come before the start date so had to lose their internships. But never heard someone whose offer was rescinded for a summer position.
The school may require a CPT letter from your employer. In that case, just be upfront. Tell them you are getting your greencard on your own and no sponsorship is required now or in the future.
Understood, thank you. I guess Im more so concerned about the prospect of them withdrawing my SA offer because they think I will need sponsorship for a FT position
Yeah, so just tell them yourself.
If you happen to need a CPT letter (other than the offer letter) from your employer, be upfront. Say you are getting a greencard by the time of FT. And this is just a temporary situation.
Any rational adult should understand.
I would just ask HR for a call and explain this in a concise way, and then follow up in writing.
Don't think this will at all be a problem, but there is still paperwork involved as an international and you don't want them to find this out without you telling them. Structure it as a "Hey just wanted to give you a heads up, have already confirmed everything on my end but just so you are aware" rather than a question.
This. CPT and OPT are not really an hassle from an employer’s perspective, but if I were you, I would communicate extremely clearly and effectively with HR so you don’t get into a shitty situation
Was in the same situation. Just tell the HR your timeline of incoming permanent work authorization status and they don't need to sponsor or do anything else to accept your CPT.
