Interviews with firms your not interested in
As some of you have read in my previous post I'm finishing my second year at a big 4 in the Asset Management practice. I'm looking to make the switch into finance.
As of now, there are only 2 places I'd leave my current job to go work for. Since I haven't been on a meaningful interview since my sophomore year of college, do you think it is a good idea to interview at some companies I'm not interested in first? I figured this could give me some preperation into what the other interviews will be like and I'll be more prepared.
Any thoughts?
Ya, I would get out there and start interviewing. You might meet with some people at one of those shops your not considering and change your mind. Always good to warm up with some interviews you don't care about.
Interviews are like IQ tests, the more you do, the better you get at them. I would recommend going to interviews with several firms that you feel you don’t want to work for, just to get the process down before you met with a “serious” interviewer. Having said that, interviewing is a somewhat random process and you never quite know how they will turn out. You may get less selective if you don’t get the offers you are hoping for.
It sounds like you are in a good position to begin with. When I was younger, I found that I interviewed at my best when I had nothing to lose. EG I’m in a good job, interested in another opportunity, but will not be too concerned if I don’t get the new role.
