Investment/Asset Management + Non-Finance Background

I currently have 2 years experience at a large bank underwriting and selling loans (mortgages and equity/non-equity credit facilities) and selling Mutual Funds (MF's) to private individual investors. Before that I worked for a year in a non-profit organization developing oil and gas training programs for new comers. And i was also an associate Realtor part-time while at uni.

I've found my passion for Investment/Asset Management through my experience selling MF's + helping clients build their net worth. I'd like to build my career moving forward working at an independent investment management firm working with more sophisticated clientele. Hope to start out in entry level roles like portfolio manager associate, mutual fund adviser, or any sort of support role there is.

I'm re-writing the CFA Level I exam this June.

I hold the Canadian Securities Course certification.

I have a BA in Social Sciences and Justice Studies - did a transfer program from a college to university and gradated at the uni.

I'm trying to gain some traction and hopefully some momentum in the Investment Management direction and build a long term career in this field; I really enjoying working with clients face to face and helping them build wealth.

Sort of an unconventional background so I was wondering what your thoughts are and If its not unusual to get in with this sort of background...I've been networking but im really worried that my social science background (mjr: criminology) and sort of unique non finance work history are deterring potential firms. Otherwise I'm licensed as a mutual funds rep and have client facing exp. with non-discretionary investment management.
