I was in contact with a recruiter and a director for a graduate analyst position. Was told that next rounds would be soon but haven't heard anything in 2 weeks. Is it worth it to reach out to the recruiter to re-express my interest or is it just a way to cope with not getting an interview?

Don't overthink it. Email them - reiterate your interest and ask if there is any update.

I literally lost a job offer recently because I didn't follow up timely for next steps. Some recruiters / hiring managers want applicants to be more proactive about it.

Also on the other hand, if you haven't heard anything yet and they silently rejected you - an email confirmation from a recruiter is better than waiting around. Easier to move on when you know that opportunity isn't happening / still in limbo.
