Is it appropriate to send a follow-up email in this situation?

I spoke to somebody working at mid-market firm. It was my first conversation with this individual, and it felt like it went well enough. To the end of our conversation, they offered to send my resume in so I sent my resume to them. This was just a couple weeks ago, and I know that things not working out could be for a variety of reasons so I'm not too hung up on it, but would it be appropriate to contact them? It was for the Summer, and I know they probably have better things to do than think about someone in my position so I was hesitant. This person was not a VP or MD, so I think I am probably SOL. Sorry if this is the wrong forum to post it to.

I would recommend 1-2 follow ups max and then leave it be. Worth it to just get an update if he knows anything about the process, but I would also reach out to HR potentially for a coffee to see where they are in the process (this should be done tactfully though) no downside here by following up (either they air you, or you get new info)

Thanks! I didn't notice anything about the posting (or for that matter, the posting itself). How long is it normally from applications closing to actual interviews?

Differs always firm to firm so you won’t know. Some firms do rolling from once it’s posted, some will only start once the posting is closed. It’s usually sooner rather than later  though in my experience and you should try reaching out/following up to apprise yourself of the process

Oh alright, so it's worth a shot emailing? My thought process was that since it's been a few weeks now there's virtually no chance I'll hear back.

Edit: I do understand that this person who offered to refer me can't get me an interview, but even if I can get an obfuscated "Yea sorry we don't want you" that would be great

Could be worth to check in with the person and see if they have any updates on their process. I’d leave it to only 1 follow up on say a Tuesday mornings maybe 2 at most. If anything try to speak with someone else in the group after 1 follow up with no reply
