Is there value to focusing on sophomore summer internships?
Rising sophomore at semi-target and wondering how important the quality of a sophomore internship is with recruiting timelines these days. I have a bullshit remote PE internship this summer that's not going to enable me to speak to any real finance experience come interview time. However, any sophomore summer internship will not have started by the end of major recruiting. Would focusing on landing a quality sophomore internship before recruiting help even though I won't be able to reflect on those experiences come interview time?
Bump
Bump, also curious.
I believe there are 5 advantages for doing a sophomore internship:
1- If you don’t get an IB internship in the winter you are not gonna have a guaranteed “plan b”.
Many places give you a return offer for your junior summer if you want to work there again.
2- If you decide to work on something more “chill” (think WM/CD), you might realize that you want to stay there.
3- You can to get an sophomore IB internship that guarantees a place for you in your junior summer.
Or even realize that banking isn’t for you and do something else your junior summer.
4- If you don’t get the job your sophomore summer but at least get an interview, you are gonna be more experienced for your junior summer interviews.
5- You are gonna be more competitive for EB/BB recruiting since you will have more experience.
(Extra) If you get a paid position your sophomore summer, you can make as much money as someone in their junior year.
Hope this helps!
Thanks so much for taking the time respond.
I wasn't really considering the fit aspect prior to your comment, and the fact that a sophomore experience will give me an opportunity to consider whether it's the right field for me. It's something I'll definitely consider now.
You’ll be able to put “Incoming (role)” on your resume which banks value
Recruiting is not everything. Yes, the internship wont have started by the time you apply for junior SA, but think about it long-term. All/most the other interns in your junior IB/PE/Anything SA will have worked in these sophomore programs. If you don’t, you are going to be at a disadvantage.
Also think about it, it is obvious that someone with “Goldman Sachs sophomore IB SA” on their resume, even if they have not started yet, will get more looks.
I dont see any scenario where not doing these sophomores programs would add more value to your career than doing them. So yeah, I would try to get some experience sophomore year if you can.
Getting the offer seems like the end goal when you get your first offer, but once you start working you realize that was just the beginning. The real end-goal during college is securing the full-time, and having work experience sophomore year will help you achieve that.
I guess I got lost in the recruiting aspect and didn't consider that recruiting is only half the battle. You've reframed the situation for me. Thanks.
