Is tranfering the right choice?
Hey, I'm currently deciding whether or not to accept a transfer to USC (SoCal).
Currently, I'm at the University of Tampa. I'm about to become a junior and next year will be looking for an internship. (I already had one freshman year but it wasn't in the field of finance). My goal is IB or trading and I am a finance major and planning on taking a math minor. Basically looking for the best job I can get whatever that realistically is.
Anyways I'm really in a dilemma weighing my options so if anyone could help me out and give me advice.
Here's what I think are potential pros and cons of transfering.
Pros of transfering:
- more reputable school name
- LA (love the city)
- for some weird reason the courseload actually looks a lot easier since I won't be able to complete my math minor and take some electives in courses related to computer technology in finance
Cons of transfering:
- If I leave, then I probably won't get any leadership opportunities.
- My GPA will be back to 0.0 (currently 3.85) and I'm not sure if I can put my cumulative GPA on resume
- I'll be completing my math minor and taking some computer science courses related to finance
- I'm planning on joining the Beta Gamma Sigma, which is an honors frat for business majors only available to the top 10% in my school
- I have a bunch of friends here and I do enjoy Tampa
- I'll probably get some leadership opportunities since I am already part of some finance clubs on campus.
So overall I realize that USC has a much better reputation, but I still don't know whether that's good enough to be giving up giving up leadership opportunities, honors frats in business, extra classes that I feel could help. In addtion I'll have to start off with a clean slate again. Opinons?
USC is not exactly a target school. Better than U of Tampa, yes, but still not that great.
Why did you want to transfer to USC? Did you apply anywhere else?
because I decided to transfer last year and when looking at all the prereqs required for all the schools, USC was the only one that would take me with the classes I took.
youll need to network like crazy either way
I don't know what these name-obsessed idiots are talking about. USC is a great school. And LA has great firms that you can intern for or go FT for. You seem sociable with leadership qualities. And if you had a good (3.6+) GPA in business at USC I would give you as serious of a consideration as any ivy league candidate. (note that I went to Penn and have no connection to USC)
You can put your UTampa school and GPA on your resume and note that you transferred. And maybe a line or two of your leadership there.
Hahah, love this post.
USC is a fine school. Not a target? Please, plenty of alumni and it will place well in LA. Way better school in my opinion. Enjoy being a trojan, so many good looking girls out there. Enjoy yourself and get some internships and you will be fine.
Just because your transfer do not think all leadership opportunities are closed to you. If you proved yourself at Tampa, no reason why you cant goto the President of USC finance clubs, and say you would like a leadership role based on what you did elsewhere.
So would more doors be open to me if I went to USC than if I stayed at UTampa? Because that's really the most important thing to me right now.
100% yes
of course. PM me.
anthony you're right, but i'll bet University of Tampa has its good share of hot girls
i went to usc, here's what i think:
no doubt, usc is a better school. but transfer only if you REALLY want to be a trojan and work in LA. otherwise, dont bother. the kids at usc who end up doing well are the ones who loved it here, networked, took advantage of every resource, and were seriously involved. if you cant picture yourself joining at least 3 campus organizations, you may not be the type of person that thrives at usc. with respect to ib recruiting, its good for the west coast. with respect to recruiting in general, its great for the west coast. and LA is a larger metro with more opportunities than a place like tampa.
usc's network is for real, its like the gift that keeps on giving.
also, is cost an issue? i wouldn't recommend taking on too much debt.
oh, and one more thing i would like to point out. this probably wouldn't have been a discussion 10 yrs ago bc usc's reputation was still shaky. today, its pretty much an indisputable fact that usc is a top academic institution. this trend reflects the overall attitude of the administration and management of usc, and i think the university will continue to improve...which is soooo fucking sweet. our student body is already on par with ucla and cal. just picture usc passing ucla in usnews rankings...that would be the day.
fight on, bitches. oh, also...fuck the ncaa.
Not to mention you'll be able to focus exclusively on academics in your fall semester since the post season ban will be in effect for the entire time you attend.
