Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, the value of a university degree is increasingly being questioned. Here are some key points:
Experience Over Degrees: Many employers are placing a higher value on work experience, career track records, and accomplishments over traditional degrees. The person with the best experience and already-obtained know-how is often preferred for jobs, regardless of their educational background.
Changing Job Market: The job market is evolving, with a greater emphasis on specialization and niche skills. This shift means that practical experience can sometimes outweigh the benefits of a degree from even the best schools.
Cost vs. Benefit: The rising cost of education is a significant factor. As tuition fees increase, fewer people may pursue traditional degrees, which could either increase the value of having a degree or make it more irrelevant.
Access to Careers: While an MBA or other advanced degrees can provide access to certain careers and networks, the actual knowledge gained may not always justify the cost, especially for those with a business background.
Entry-Level Requirements: Despite the growing emphasis on skills and experience, many entry-level positions still require a four-year degree. This requirement can limit access to certain jobs for those without a traditional educational background.
In summary, while a university degree can still open doors and provide valuable networks, its necessity is increasingly being challenged by the value of practical experience and specialized skills.

Unless you plan on doing blue-collar jobs, most, if not all, jobs have a degree requirement at the very least. Assuming you're talking about jobs in finance since you posted on this forum, good luck getting a job at a finance firm without a degree (unless your parents are billionaires). A college degree is necessary today to get a decent job and helps build a network.
