job potential possiblities?

What are my chances of obtaining a decent job (with a respectable firm/preferably dealing with trading but open to other ideas) with the following credentials? What type of approach should I take? All advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Bachelor of science degree from the Ohio State University (2009)
  • 2.4 gpa in agriculture business and Applied Economics
  • Professional online/live (90/10%) poker player (2006-2011)
    • $1.1M in career online tournament earnings
    • $50k in career live tournament winnings
    • Ranked as high as 184th in the world for online poker tournaments (as of February 2011)
    • Backed for high stakes tournaments (live/online) by sheets/bax (two former successful wall street workers who also backed Joe Cada when he won the wsop main event for $8M+ as well as many other huge name players in the poker industry). I was backed for buyins up to $10,300.
    • traveled often for poker during college which contributed to low GPA (Bahamas, Aruba, Vegas, etc)
    • Continuously dealt with large downswings mentally and was able to keep a level/positive head and reach new career profit peaks consistently.
    • Capable of profitably playing 15 poker tables at once
    • capable of dealing with high pressure/stress profit situations well
    • Beneficially used HUD (heads up display which outlined opponents tendencies) to my advantage in order to maximize long-run profits
  • The DOJ ended my career on April 15th, 2011 when they decided to shutdown the big 3 (pokerstars, ftp, UB) which is why I’m now seeking employment in a similar field.

google jason strasser (although if you're as good as you say you are i'm sure you have heard of him)

if you are anything like him at all, you will see that although highly unlikely, it is entirely possible to break into trading with a background like that. will it be difficult? extremely. you just have to bust your ass and prove you can do it.

here's his post on the 2+2 forums when he decided to leave the online poker scene.

thanks. I'm familiar with him and his story. I'll be the first to admit that he's more intelligent than me with a much harder degree from a much more respectable school especially for wall street prospects. He's also had more poker success than I. I guess I'm primarily interested in knowing if it'd even be worth my time attempting to establish a career in this area. It seems like it'll be extremely difficult which I guess is somewhat discouraging but at the same time very expected. When you say that, "I'll have to bust my ass to prove I can do i..." where do I start? I'm totally clueless when it comes to this part. How do I go about even getting a chance to prove I can do it?

Network, Network, Network. Since you came from such a big school like Ohio State, leveRAGE is 100% right...you have a great amount of people to pull from. Some great ways of tapping into alumni network:

  • Check linkedin and search in alumni section
  • Use linkedin search function but instead of people search "companies" and put in some companies you are interested in...it will then show you some alumni who work at that firm
  • call alumni office and get logged into the alumni database (if you haven't already) and contact everyone and anyone for at least informational interviews or opportunities
  • since you graduated a few years ago, check with friends to see who from your class is in trading and contact them
