Late graduation and how it may impact my recruiting
If I graduate winter 2027 due to a medical leave of absence for a semester but I grind an internship during that time post op, would I still be good for SA 2027 applications? My original graduation date if I didn’t take the medical leave of absence would be May 2027. If I have a 3.7, am diversity, go to an Ivy target, have decent relevant experience on my resume, would I have a hard time recruiting? Would I even qualify for BB sophomore summer applications?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation seems manageable and could even work to your advantage if approached strategically. Here's a breakdown:
SA 2027 Applications: Since your new graduation date is Winter 2027, you would still qualify for SA 2027 recruiting. Banks typically look for candidates graduating in December or May of the following year for their summer analyst programs. Your medical leave and subsequent internship during that time can be framed positively, showing resilience and dedication.
BB Sophomore Summer Applications: For BB sophomore summer internships, eligibility is usually tied to your graduation year. If your adjusted timeline aligns with the required graduation dates (e.g., December 2027 - June 2028), you should qualify. However, confirm specific program requirements as they can vary by bank.
Recruiting Challenges: With a 3.7 GPA, diversity status, Ivy target school background, and relevant experience, you are in a strong position. The key will be to effectively communicate your story during interviews, emphasizing how you overcame challenges and used your time productively (e.g., the internship post-op).
Networking: Start networking early. Reach out to alumni, attend events, and leverage your school's resources to build connections. This will help mitigate any concerns about your adjusted timeline.
Resume Framing: Highlight your GPA, diversity, and relevant experience prominently. Be prepared to explain your medical leave briefly and focus on how you used that time to grow professionally.
In summary, your late graduation should not significantly hinder your recruiting prospects if you position your story well and continue to build your profile through networking and internships.
