Lie My Way to Diversity??

Hello Monkeys,

Seeing the latest post about a guy being hit on because he lied and self-identified as a member of the LGBTQ+ community got me thinking. 

I am a first-year international male student from South Asia with a 4.0 GPA at a non-target LAC. Being an Asian Male, I don't identify as diversity, which means I don't get access to early insight and sophomore analyst programs at IBs, HFs, PE firms. But seeing people abuse the diversity programs by simply identifying as bisexual or gay and getting access to these early events makes me want to do the same. I know it's FOMO that's driving me crazy, but instead of battling with myself, I thought I'd reach out to the professional community here to have your two cents on the following questions:

Should I lie and self-identify as a part of the LGBTQ+ community to get my foot in the door? Why, or why not? And if I go the non-diversity route, how likely are my chances to break into IB given my background? (PS- In addition to a 4.0 GPA at a non-target LAC, I have relevant buy-side finance experienceMFs and PE firms)

While diversity programs are great ways for banks to pipeline unique talent, they are still EXTREMELY selective! 

Many of these special people selected into the program have a work ethic of a robotic arm and know what being discriminated against is like so they have the passion to fuel an god damn army

Hahaha, don't listen to this diversity clown, OP. Diversity is a fraud so it's fine to to scam the scammers. Smoke Frog gave great advice below and I would echo the same, especially the part about being intelligent with your lies

 

As cold as this reply is, this is the truth I didn't want to hear. I appreciate your honesty and bluntness because it got me thinking straight and clear–there are no schortcuts. You are indeed what you are in the dark. Thanks for pointing that out. 

 

The above poster is obviously mad, but not sure why. He’s acting like diversity people don’t lie and cheat and try to hustle lol. They are humans just like everyone else.

Being an Asian male is tough, because those people tend to have the best grades and terrific resumes. So you’re already at a huge disadvantage.

All this diversity silliness was never a thing when I was starting out, but if I was starting out now I would want any kind of edge I could get.

The easiest route I would think would be saying you’re bi, seems very easy thing to pretend to be. Then you’re competing for spots in much less competitive talent pool.

It’s hard to break into a top firm, especially since you went to a weak school, so do whatever you can to hustle. But be intelligent about your lies. What I mean is, try to embellish and not make some claim that’s difficult to back up.

So lie about your gpa but not your school. Lie about you actual responsibilities at an internship but don’t just make up an internship experience. Like and say your bi and not one of more extreme diversity options.

The above poster mentioned the diversity track is competitive, but it can never be as competitive as the normal process.

And these days people are “fluid” so you can day your bi now and then in two years just tell everyone you’re now straight because your gender changes or whatever. These days you can say you’re attracted to anything and anyone and then just change your view like a week later lol.

 

He's not lying about being an Asian male.. he's planning on lying about being LGBTQ+ did you read the post? It’s a literal recipe for disaster. People in these programs don’t “change their minds one week later lol” they are in these programs because they have passion, they’ve been oppressed, it’s literally their identity. Lol this place is riddled with disrespect.

I think forcing diversity candidates is silly. Two equal candidates, and one gets hired because they identify as bi and the other one identifies as straight is not right in my opinion. I believe people should be hired based on merit and personality, and their race or creed or culture should have zero to do with anything.

And Asian males tend take academics seriously and be the best candidates. That’s just a fact. In fact there is a supreme law case going on right now about how Harvard discriminated against Asians because their applications are too good

youte actually the dangerous one. Pretending asians are not smart despite obvious evidence and real world examples we have all seen and that diversity is the main criteria to be considered whenever hiring someone.

 

Diversity programs are meant to celebrate a persons differences. The program allows banks to recruit people with unique perspectives instead this prevents "group think", banks these days are trying to avoid agreeableness and diversity their human capital.

I know this is actually a surprise to you and the author of the thread but there are actually "Asian/Pacific Islander" diversity programs so you don't have to lie about being gay, congrats.

Also, Asian/Pacific Islander is in fact minority group, I'm well aware as the bank I was at had a diversity program for that too. Thx.

but you’re making it a requirement that you must hire x amount of diversity candidates. That’s not right.

How is ones sexual orientation able to be a different perspective? Wouldn’t you rather consider ones ethnicity or where they grew up or what major they studied or their internships experiences? What does who they sleep with have anything to do with anything?

you’re saying hiring diverse people is good, which no one can argue with.

but then you’re saying you MUST hire a certain amount of them. And you’re saying diversity should be heavily skewed towards the sexual orientation element of people.

And in my entire career I have never ever heard of a bank having an Asian hire requirement so not sure what bank you worked at where this program was, but it’s quite rare and I think you know that.

 

LOL. Man did you even read this guy's post? Your reading comprehension skills are so bad. He never said that OP is lying about being Asian and he was obviously talking about diversity HIRING as being silly, not diversity in itself. But then again, you can't expect diversity hires to read beyond a 8th grade level anyways

Also, diversity hires are not "oppressed", lose that victim mentality. Keep on MSing these posts bud

 

You know that banks know that there are scammers, right? Don’t be too shocked if you don’t get far enough to get an offer. Banks want people who are out on their resumes like have extracurricular and academic work that is LGBTQ+ so they can tokenize them. They’re looking for people whose all identity is centered around their sexuality. If you’re not a leader in a queer and trans group on campus or none of your academic/volunteer work is related to LGBTQ+ community then your resume will get tossed. How far are you willing to lie and pretend to get that offer? If you’re at a school that has a significant business and queer community like Wharton then you’ll be exposed faster than you can say superday.

 

No, don't lie your way to diversity. You shouldn't lie about your sexual orientation and you never know where the lie will really end. Diversity programs are also more competitive then people think. I was in a diversity program with a BB and the conversion rate was about 4%. And that 4% earned it, when it came down to it they were really the top talent within the group. It seems like you have strong stats and background. Take advantage of what you can but stay honest.
