LinkedIn profile vs Resume

So when applying to positions, when they give you the choice to provide your linkedin account or resume, do you guys think one is better than the other? I doubt it makes a difference but I was just curious, thinking it might help that they get to see your picture or something like that.

Nah, my linkedin just lists my work experience with a short description of what I did...something like this:

Summer Analyst company May 2013 – July 2013 (3 months) [Division] - [Coverage/Specialty] so...IBD - Healthcare or something to that effect

For the projects section, I go into a lot more detail. My resume is basically the opposite, where I have more detail about work experience and more or less a short blurb about projects I'm working on. Not sure if this is the ideal format but I saw a couple KKR associates on linkedin had this format so I adopted it.

 

Interesting question. My Linkedin is short form of my resume, where I just list jobs and titles I held for previous roles.

No, definitely not. I use less detail & more generalized descriptions of responsibilities. Fewer bullet points (I hate reading paragraphs when I'm trying to skim someone's profile). I specifically searched for more polished, accomplished individuals than myself & copied the formatting that I liked best...

 

No, because too lazy to copy and paste.

Honestly though, I don't really think having a super extensive LinkedIn profile is as necessary in finance as in industries like IT. Just have the basics so people who only know your first name and firm can find you and you can reach out to alumni, that is enough I suppose.

 

Nope, not at all.

While the basics are the same, as are some of the quantitative performance metrics, I go into much more detail on LinkedIn. I also write in first person in both the summary and job descriptions. I write about the challenges I faced in each position as well as how I overcame them, with a short paragraph and 5 or 6 bullets for my most recent positions.

 

There is no right or wrong way to do it.

I suggest looking at people in the industry you want to work (both at the level you'd enter at and higher up) and model it after that.

Other advice is pretty generic, such as recommendations are one of the areas people look at most, join a lot of relevant groups (alumni + professional), and follow companies you have interest in. Lots of great article floating around the internet on advice and "dos and donts" lists out there if you Google around a bit. Good luck!
