LinkedIn then Email?

I connected with a few people on LinkedIn recently that I want to network/chat with. Is it better for me to send them a linkedin dm or email them to speak? What will get a better response rate? If I do end up emailing, should I be like "we recently connected on linkedin and would love to talk"? Basically don't want to come off as weird or hardo

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. LinkedIn vs. Email:

    • LinkedIn: Some users have found LinkedIn to be more effective, especially for initial outreach. It allows the recipient to quickly review your background and experience, which can be beneficial if you don't come from a target school or have a less recognizable email domain.
    • Email: Others have noted that email tends to have a higher response rate, particularly for senior professionals. Emails are often preferred for their archiving features and the ability to craft a more detailed message.
  2. Strategy:

    • Younger Professionals: LinkedIn might be more effective for reaching out to younger professionals or those at the analyst level.
    • Senior Professionals: Email is generally preferred for managing directors or senior-level contacts.
  3. Combining Both:

    • Initial Connection on LinkedIn: Start by connecting on LinkedIn to establish a baseline for your experience and qualifications.
    • Follow-Up via Email: After connecting, follow up with an email. Mention your recent LinkedIn connection to provide context and avoid coming off as "weird or hardo."
  4. Email Template:

    • Introduction: "Hello Name, we recently connected on LinkedIn, and I wanted to reach out to see if you would be open to a brief chat about [specific topic or industry]."
    • Purpose: Clearly state your purpose for the conversation, whether it's to learn more about their career path, seek advice, or discuss potential opportunities.
    • Politeness: Be polite and respectful of their time, and suggest a few time slots for the call.

By following this approach, you can maximize your chances of getting a positive response and building a meaningful connection.
