Controversial

Being a diversity candidate actually doesn’t help and becomes quite obvious in a diversity interview if you are lying.

I could immediately tell in one interview that someone was lying about being Hispanic (as a Hispanic male myself)

He said he was from Mexico and spoke fluent Spanish and only communicates with his parents in Spanish. I then switched the interview to Spanish and he knew literally nothing. He came clean and told me he was not diversity and that he “accidentally put that down.” Turns out he is from NYC and has very wealthy parents from the USA

I obviously dinged him, flagged to HR that he was lying and they blacklisted him from there. Finance is a tight knit community and I can assure you that lying about diversity can definitely be found out quite simply and the second it is it can really ruin things for you. I have told all my friends this story at other banks and they all now know about this.

You can get into investment banking regardless of school, GPA, race, etc. just be yourself and work hard for it. I help with a lot of recruiting for my bank (and I am at what many would consider a “top group”). I am actually a big fan of non-traditional applicants because if they are serious about it they have this hunger that others just simply don’t have. BTW, I was a non-diversity applicant before anyone here thinks my views are tainted because of my ethnicity.

What if you're less than 1/2 but the heritage is still there though you don't look it or have a Spanish name? For me, I'm 1/8th Hispanic and don't have a strong connection to my heritage but it exists. Would I get grilled over that?

Choose one

Why are you lying about diversity not helping? lol they literally don’t go through the same interview process and are held to the lowest standards possible.

Diversity definitely helps from a SA perspective. I am talking about and have only conducted FT interviews. I am saying only for FT positions being diversity doesn’t help. Everyone is evaluated the same and asked the same questions (at least at my bank).

Also, as I have been conducting interviews this year (I’m not An1 title won’t update) I have been seeing that nearly every FT applicant is a diversity applicant. A lot of these diversity applicants get hosed on return offers and then the more traditional win the FT offers.

Last thing, why would I lie about this? I gain nothing from doing so. I am sharing a story that I was involved in and essentially saying lying about something is bad and everyone is up in arms. I didn’t make him speak Spanish or ask him technicals in Spanish. I simply switched into Spanish and said “that is so cool, where are your parents from in Mexico?” He had no idea what I was saying so I repeated myself and he then came clean. I also am not asking everyone in interviews their ethnic background, he started his story off by saying those things and I jokingly spoke Spanish and realized he was lying

BTW, I was a non-diversity applicant before anyone here thinks my views are tainted because of my ethnicity.

Does it really matter? If I'm looking to hire more black analysts, it doesn't really matter if they applied through a diversity program or a regular program. You fill the position partially on race either way. HR has your race information regardless of which avenue.

From what I've seen (reading here), HR doesn't want the entire firm to get cancelled as that's a potential massive minefield. It's similar with race - they're not going to ask for a 23 and me or a genealogy in the case that someone's lying, so they accept whatever race people claim, within reason of course - e.g. if you look 100% East Asian it's not a good idea to fake you're black. There are legitimate multiracial people who look like just one race anyway so they're not going to challenge you on that.

Not a good idea to do initially, but how tf are they gonna know you’re not half Hispanic?

Moms Hispanic and dads white. Simple as that. Plenty of dull Hispanic people that look fully white (look at the European population in Mexico). They’ve been Mexicans for generations but look completely white.

Again not recommended but if you get that far then ohh well.

You’re correct in this thinking, I’ll give you that.

But the truth is, all big companies are doing this, in any industrial or vertical. Higher ed is also doing it. Saw another post on here that PE intern spots were force filled by 60% diversity, with the other 40% being strongly recommended to be filled by diversity as well.

What would you do in my shoes? Go start a business right out of undergrad? Go into graduate school for a career path I have no interest in?

First world problems I know, but I kinda made this cynical post to shed light to how screwed the system is. I applied to 20+ internships, many of which were overseas off cycle. Had 1 interview with a PE firm that admitted to having 2 spots with thousands of applicants and basically told me on the first round that it was very competitive.

Current path is to do MBB overseas if possible then get MBA and come back to the states through that.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

I hear you, it’s a tough spot to be in and we’re all dealing with this shit.

From the looks and sound of it, it seems to be more pronounced now than it’s been in years prior. The crooked diversity logic has gained more steam each year over the last 5 years, at least it seems. Although, it’s beginning to turn with the latest Supreme Court ruling. But by it’s (diversity hiring) nature it is flawed. It is flawed logic. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. And if the logic of an idea is flawed than the idea itself will eventually crash or cause ruin.

To think that you can counter the flaw with another wrongful act is just unwise. It will hurt you one way or another long term or immediate term. It’s kind of just the way of the world and you learn it with age in decision making and observation.

If I were you and you could get into MBB without being a fraud, bending the rules of the universe to suit yourself, might not that be an excellent outcome? Go MBB take on a shit ton of PE DD work and work your way over.

Truth will never change my friend. And it will always be a conduit for generating business in the marketplace. Be honest

Calling it “debasing yourself” is a bit much.

It’s a stupid process that obsesses over ethnicity. Checking a box to play along with the silly game doesn’t do much damage to the soul IMHO.

Well these silly little games add up to the shit show macro environment that we’re all now beholden to. Whether checking a box as an applicant or refusing to speak up at the next DEI meeting, you’re debasing yourself by not being as truthful as you could be. No matter which way we slice it, that’s just what it is. Hashtag Reality check Saturday

I wouldn’t put Hispanic if you’re not Hispanic LOL, but there is no way they’ll just start speaking in Spanish to you.

There’s nothing they can do to stop you from checking Hispanic.

But the only use of that box is to invite diverse candidates to special events and in some cases a separate super day.

At those events and super days, you’ll be pretty much the only honky there except maybe a gay dude or two.  People will wonder what your category is, and they won’t really care whether you outright lied or simply stretched the truth.  Even if they think you’re half, they’ll probably consider you not really diverse (keep in mind their goal is to *show* management that they met diversity goals) and ding you.

It probably won’t hurt you but it’s very unlikely to help, and there’s a chance it really hurts if they decide to just play the odds and assume you’re the Rachel Dolezal or Elizabeth Warren of Hispanic bankers.
