Malaysia student looking for IB advice

My end goal for now is to enter IB BB overseas in the US, UK, SG, or HK. Of course, the best outcome is that I got there directly. But if I don't, are there any good alternatives? Is it better for me to enter regional IB like Maybank, Big 4 Valuation/M&A/CF and lateral, taking an MBA in NUS or HKU maybe, or are there any other ways?

Hey there! It sounds like you're really motivated to break into investment banking, which is great! Based on the most helpful WSO content, there are several paths you could consider:

  1. Regional Investment Banking: Starting your career in a regional investment bank like Maybank could be a good stepping stone. It would allow you to gain relevant experience and skills, which could make you a more attractive candidate for BBs in the future.

  2. Big 4 Valuation/M&A/CF: Working in Valuation, M&A, or Corporate Finance at a Big 4 firm could also provide valuable experience. These roles often involve similar skills and tasks to those in investment banking, which could help you transition into a BB later on.

  3. MBA: An MBA from a reputable institution like NUS or HKU could potentially open doors for you. Many BBs recruit directly from top MBA programs, so this could be a good opportunity to break into the industry. However, keep in mind that this is a significant investment of time and money.

  4. Networking: Regardless of the path you choose, networking will be crucial. Try to connect with professionals in the industry, attend events, and make use of any alumni networks you may have access to.

Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all answer here. The best path for you will depend on your specific circumstances and goals. Good luck!
