Math & CS background, interested in finance
I am a rising senior double-majoring in CS and applied math, and will attempt getting an internship as quant or algorithmic trader. Any advice on this? What are the specifics of each position? How much finance background do I need? Is there a particular book you would recommend for getting hold of the basics? Maybe basic Black-Scholes by Crack? I'd like to read something essential and onto the point, that'd give me the biggest bang for the buck. Thanks
Expect to spend a few years working on a pricing system or as a quant developer. In terms of finance background, it would probably be good to take a derivatives course or two, but if you're strong in algorithms and/or machine learning, you've got a pretty solid base for quant development.
I would suggest going into a 1yr MFE program then getting a job as an associate since the pay between entry level analysts and associates vary a decent amount. (so does the bonuses) Not only will you be in a better position, but you will learn everything finance at the same time. Also if you don't mind the extra work, look into the cfa as well, because it will teach you everything outside the realm of quantitative strategies.
