Morgan Stanley Wealth Management Internship prestige/ value?

I'm a freshman at a top school who previously did a congressional internship. Thru networking, I will likely have an offer to work for MS wealth management this summer. Should I take it or is wealth management not prestigious and will it not help me gain better internships? Should I instead apply for other internships? I want to go into IB or MBB.

Is it for the New York office in their structured WM program, or are you gonna be getting coffee for a random guy who has a book in like Nashville or dc? No shame in either, just affects your prospects for SA 2025.

Okay, basically you’re not part of the Wealth Management Sophomore Summer Analyst program. In terms of what your actual work/learning experience is gonna look like, it’s tbd and could vary. In terms of utility for recruiting for IB/ER/MBB, it’s an okay sophomore internship but honestly not great. IMO it would be better to work at a boutique investment bank or private equity fund, or even a smaller asset manager in an ER role. If you have WM on your resume, you’ll have to answer why you don’t wanna do WM and they will dig into that in interviews. It does help that MS is top tier in both WM and IB, but still you won’t be dealing with transactions and (maybe) only rudimentary financial analysis. People will assume you were a cold call monkey. Overall not bad if you don’t have a backup, but it’s pretty easy to get a boutique IB internship and I think that would be more helpful if you’re set on IB in New York. Not super familiar with MBB, but I think it would be even less helpful there because you’re not critically thinking about businesses. Hope that helps, sorry to potentially burst your bubble lol. If you work hard this year you’ll do fine tho regardless of soph internship status. Good luck!

Should clarify, not sure what year you are. If you’re talking about doing MS WM for summer after your freshman year, go for it that’s a great opportunity as anything that’s not shoveling shit is good for freshman year. For sophomore summer tho would recommend something as closely related to IB as possible, preferably boutique IB, PE or ER at a small investment fund. Hope that helps!

Yes, it would be for the summer after freshman year. However, for resume purposes, would it be worth/ help much in the recruiting process for IB/MBB? Is it an above average or even elite internship for the summer after freshman year for someone who wants NYC IB/MBB? Thanks

Okay sick, sorry couldn’t tell what year you were. Congrats that’s a sick internship for freshman year and will set you up well to get an elite soph summer internship. If you qualify as diversity, you should try and get the first year business analyst job at McKinsey. That’s the only freshman internship that’s more prestigious than WM at a top BB. Honestly, focus on learning the technicals and ironing out your behavioral interview questions so you’re prepared to recruit for sophomore summer BB internships during your freshman spring/summer. This is coming from a current soph Sa at a top BB, and I had a similar path. If you’re not diversity, don’t worry about the McKinsey thing. Either way, congrats that’s an wesome opportunity and you’re ahead of the game. Keep pushing because there’s a lot you have to learn between now and ~march to get a BB offer for soph year, but being at a target will help. Congrats and good luck, if you’ve got any questions lmk
