Moving from the UK to the USA.

Hi, I'm a final-year student at a semi-target university in the UK, but so far, SA recruiting hasn’t worked out as I expected. Last summer, I secured a Wealth Management internship at a top 3 Bulge Bracket bank. While it was a good experience, my attempt to internally recruit for an IB summer role was unsuccessful.

Lately, I’ve been considering whether the UK is the right fit for me. I believe I have the skills necessary to succeed in the right environment. For example, I’ve managed to network my way into recommendations to senior executives at both Elite Boutiques and Bulge Bracket banks, and I was even invited for a personal meeting with a board member at a BB. Despite these efforts, I’ve yet to secure an IB internship. I also feel that staying in London long term may not be the best move for me; I don’t particularly connect with the culture or the people here.

I’m originally from West Africa and currently studying in the UK as an international student. I have the financial resources to pursue a master’s degree in the US, but my main concern is my academic record. Without going into too much detail, my early development was hindered, and while I managed to get into a good university, I fear I may graduate with a 2:2. This is holding me back, but I’m considering pursuing a master’s in the US—possibly even at a lower-tier institution if necessary.

If I don’t secure an opportunity before my UK student visa expires, my plan is to switch to a graduate visa and apply for off-cycle roles. If that doesn’t work out, I intend to apply for a master’s in the US and leave the UK for good.

My main question is: will the US job market be more forgiving, given its size and its emphasis on networking? I feel like this might be the right path for me to advance my career.
