Need Advice Finding Internships – Terrible GPA at Target

I'm a junior at one of HYP with a cumulative GPA just below 3.0. My first-year GPA was above 3.0, but in my sophomore fall, I missed about half the semester due to personal circumstances, which tanked my cumulative GPA. Since then, I was able to obtain a 3.7 in sophomore spring and have continued to perform well while studying abroad at a European target in my now junior year. Unfortunately, my study abroad grades don’t factor into my home university GPA, so I'm still a hair under 3.0.

I have no prior internship experience and obviously won’t secure anything for summer 2025, so I’ve decided to take an extra semester (graduating Dec 2026) to have another shot at recruiting. I’m confident I can bring my GPA up to at least a 3.2 after the next fall term, though I'm unsure if it'll be too late by then.

Given that summer 2026 recruiting is already happening and my GPA is still a hair under 3.0, how cooked am I? The dream was BB or MBB, but I'm pretty much open to any industry at this point. Am also open to global opportunities (I speak multiple languages). Any recommendations for someone in my position?

Not sure if any of this matters but some other info about me: I have work experience (took a gap between high school and college and opened a small business that's still operating), speak three languages, and I'm a POC that qualifies for diversity if that's still a thing lol.

TLDR: Attend HYP, graduating December 2026, GPA slightly below 3.0 (can get it up to 3.2 by end of fall 2026), currently studying abroad. Seeking advice for summer 2026 internships – Preferably IB or Consulting but will consider anything atp. US preferred but open to UK/Europe/LATAM

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a game plan for your situation:

  1. Leverage Your Story: Your personal circumstances and subsequent academic recovery are key to crafting a compelling narrative. Highlight your resilience, the upward trend in your GPA, and your proactive decision to take an extra semester to improve your profile. This can resonate with recruiters, especially if you position it as a story of growth and determination.

  2. Network Aggressively: Networking is your golden ticket. Reach out to alumni from your home university and your study abroad institution, especially those in IB or consulting. Use LinkedIn, cold emails, and informational interviews to build connections. Your diverse background and multilingual skills can be strong conversation starters.

  3. Target Boutique Firms and Smaller Shops: While BB and MBB might be challenging with your current GPA, boutique investment banks, consulting firms, or even regional offices of larger firms could be more accessible. These firms often have more flexible GPA requirements and value unique experiences like your entrepreneurial background.

  4. Highlight Your Unique Selling Points: Your entrepreneurial experience, multilingual abilities, and diversity status are significant assets. Emphasize these in your resume and during interviews. For example, your business experience demonstrates initiative, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

  5. Focus on Technical and Behavioral Prep: Use resources like WSO’s technical guides and behavioral interview prep to ensure you’re ready for interviews. A strong performance can help offset a lower GPA.

  6. Consider Non-Traditional Paths: If IB or consulting doesn’t work out immediately, explore roles in corporate finance, Big 4 advisory, or even startups. These can serve as stepping stones to your ultimate goal.

  7. Apply Globally: Your openness to global opportunities is a huge advantage. Look into firms in the UK, Europe, and LATAM, where your multilingual skills and international experience could set you apart.

  8. Diversity Programs: Many firms have diversity recruiting programs that could work in your favor. Research and apply to these programs, as they often have more flexible requirements and provide direct access to recruiters.

  9. Unpaid or Remote Internships: If you’re struggling to secure a paid role, consider unpaid or remote internships at smaller firms. These can help you build relevant experience and strengthen your resume.

  10. Timing and GPA Improvement: By the time you’re recruiting for summer 2026, aim to have your GPA at or above 3.2. This will help you meet more firms’ cutoffs and make your application more competitive.

Remember, persistence and strategic networking can open doors even when the odds seem stacked against you. Keep pushing, and don’t hesitate to reach out to mentors or peers for guidance along the way.
