Need some advice - Non-target with acceptable GPA
Hey WSO,
little background on me...
1) Non-Target with an acceptable gpa. (Graduated June '10) [gpa might be considered low, but that was due to working 40 hours a week while going to school full-time]
2) IB Internships with Lehman Brothers (Energy Coverage Group) & UBS (Generalist)
3) Currently working as a credit analyst at a regional retail bank.
4) Looking to go back into IB.
5) Networking - at least trying.
Do I stand a chance to make it?
I would appreciate any feedback.
the odds depend on you
Hmm, why didn't you go into investment banking right out of undergrad?
If you previously had an IB internship, at some point someone will ask what was asked above - "why didn't you go into IB directly out of undergrad?" If you didn't have the IB internship before, they may not ask because they may assume that maybe you didn't know about banking beforehand. But you did, and you had 2 internships in fact, so you have to come up with a really good story. Otherwise, people can assume the worst.
You definitely do have a chance, but it really depends on how much you're doing to network and find openings for yourself. Have you tried reaching out to your old bosses at UBS, or followed up with colleagues/bosses previously at Lehman (chances are, a bunch of them are at Barclays... or scattered elsewhere). Assuming you did well, or at least decent, you can try and network with them.
