Networking

Ok so I’ve applied to a few IB full-time analyst roles and am now networking. I’ve networked before for internships but with most people it felt like I was going through the motions rather than getting anything useful or enjoyable out of connecting. Don’t get me wrong I got pushed to a last round interview from a good conversation but for the most part it felt forced and pointless. For those of you working in IB and those that have had good success networking into IB what are the do’s and do not’s? I’ve already looked at and implemented the basic tips that can be found online but I’d like more example and industry based advice. Thanks!

- Put in effort beforehand: do your research on the firm, person and role

- Be prepared with good questions (derived from your research)

- Be prepared to discuss yourself in a concise manner

- Be grateful this person took the time to discuss things with you (they're likely pretty fucking busy and weren't obligated to)

- Actually give a shit about what they're saying - if you can't come up with a good reason for the conversation, don't reach out -- just "networking" doesn't do anything, look to develop quality relationships

- Take notes (if it's not during, then summarize thoughts afterwards), it'll force you to be more engaged

- Focus: if it's a call don't do other things in the background, if it's coffee or drinks then be present
