Networking ninja
Hello Monkey's,
Long story short I am looking for suggestions (bullet points easy for you and I) on how to network effectively and land a Fall internship/Spring internship and most importantly a summer internship...
I've read around a lot and found some good guides, I'm sure most people know mergers-and-inquisitions, I downloaded the free networking ninja guide
Currently I am perfecting my 2-3 line pitch for cold calls, will rehearse them and start from low-to-high priority banks.. perfecting my story for if I am asked, tidying up my resume and etc.
I was wondering if anyone can give me any other suggestions on what I could do to improve my methods
I study at a college located in Wellesley (not Bentley) and have a lower end GPA 3.0 and I am a junior @ a semi-target (I will make my GPA at least a 3.5+ above or so help me god hopefully 3.7+ by graduation)
I have some internships with minor finance relation, some leadership activities acting as CFO in upper curriculum (business plan for start-up pitch)
So given my situation and somewhat late entrance into the game im realistically looking for any finance related internship
That said I have seen the company databse, which is nothing short of amazing so I'm going to make a list of banks over the weekend..
Also I am currently interning in Georgia (the country as in post-communist block country Georgia) so my options of picking up a phone or somewhat limited I will have to do this when I get back to the States on the 25th.
Okay. so that is already wordy enough and I thank you for hearing me out
I would invite any input from anyone on this site on their personal experiences and what I can expect.. I am confident I can find something and am not afraid of being rejected, turned down, etc..
Peace and enjoy your weekend!
Have you taken a look at Mergers & Inquisitions? They have a lot of great (free) information there.
For sure, I'm still reading all the articles one-by-one the audio's are good too but are somewhat long and I tend to read through the script to not miss anything.. I will continue to read everything under "recruiting" section
Make a list of alumni from your school working in finance and go to town.
My emails go: one sentence about who I am one sentence about why I'm interested in banking one sentence about what you'd want out of a conversation (advice, perspectives, etc.) one sentence about speaking with them/meeting with them soon
If the person's an alumnus they aren't really looking for a reason to ignore your email once they've read it, so I wouldn't spend too long fretting about word choice. 80+% of alumni from my college are willing to speak with me about their experiences and will often introduce me to other alumni from our school.
I'd highly suggest you search WSO - there is a wealth of great information on networking, cold-calling, etc. Try our search with a variety of related phrases and I'm sure you will pick up some great advice. we are approaching 1 million comments on ~200,000 discussions, so there is a LOT of content here related to this exact question.
