Networking on Facebook

FB is a social networking site and I'm hesitant to do any professional networking on it. What are the general rules concerning this?

my story: I applied for a job and after some snooping on LinkedIn I found that someone who graduated from my school last year works there. I then looked this person up on Facebook and noticed that we have quite a few mutual friends. I would rather contact her through FB because of this, but idk it just feels weird. I just want to ask her about the program, etc.

It can't be difficult to track down her email address. Reach out to her directly and steer clear of FB on this one.

Here are some tips on ways that you can effectively use social media sites to help you in your job search:

Try to find their work email address and send them a short message. There are plenty of threads on how to network with alumni. Once you chat with them once or twice, add them on LinkedIn. Then try to build out your connections through secondary connections on LinkedIn.

Don't add alumni on facebook unless you were actually friends with them when they were in school. Keep facebook separate from your professional network.

Steer clear of Facebook for cold outreach. Even if they have 900 friends, it's still like showing up at their birthday party uninvited and unknown. If you are both members of some small, unusual or highly selective group, it's less freaky but still FB is for connecting with people you've generally actually met.

Stick to sending an email. With only a tiny bit of initiative you should be able to get his email address. LinkedIn is another good bet. Here are tips on how to use LinkedIn to build out your network

I disagree, I think you should add him as a friend, poke him, and request him to be in a relationship with you (obviously you make the status "Complicated", until you get the offer at least).

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

Haha, nice post Flake.

In all seriousness, it depends how much older your alum friend is. If he's 2-3 years your senior, yeah whatever, facebook him. But 5-6 years is where you may start crossing the line into private territory. (/seriousness ends)

Here's a test to see whether you should send him a request.

1) When he was getting piss drunk during his freshman year in college, were you in HS yet? 2) Do you have more than 10 mutual friends with him?

If you answered Yes to both questions, do not hesitate to message him on facebook.
