Not sure if I messed up my interview, any insight?

Recently had an interview for a BB regarding an S&T role. Everything went well but when talking about whats going on in the markets I didn’t really have an opportunity to discuss what the US is going to be doing with interest rates. It felt like the interviewer was trying to get me to talk a bit about some macro factors but generally I only mentioned tariffs coming out the the US election. Would I get dinged for something like this? Like I said everything else went really well but I’m worried that not talking about rates messed me up

Also for context it was for an equities position not FICC

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding your interview experience:

  1. Market Knowledge:

    • It's crucial to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of current market conditions, including macroeconomic factors like interest rates, even if the position is for equities.
    • While tariffs and election outcomes are important, interest rates are a significant driver of market movements and should be included in your discussion.
  2. Interview Dynamics:

    • Interviewers often look for candidates who can think broadly about market influences. Missing out on discussing interest rates might be seen as a gap in your market knowledge.
    • However, if the rest of your interview went well, this single omission might not be a deal-breaker.
  3. Handling Criticism:

    • If you feel you missed an important point, it's essential to remain calm and acknowledge it if brought up. Steering the conversation back to your strengths and base case can help mitigate any negative impact.
  4. Equities vs. FICC:

    • Even though the position is for equities, understanding the broader market, including fixed income and interest rates, is beneficial. It shows a well-rounded knowledge base.
  5. Future Preparation:

    • For future interviews, ensure you cover a range of macroeconomic factors, including interest rates, inflation, and other significant market drivers.
    • Practice discussing these topics fluently and relate them to the specific role you're applying for.

In summary, while not discussing interest rates might be a minor setback, it’s not necessarily a deal-breaker if the rest of your interview was strong. For future interviews, ensure you cover a broad range of market factors to demonstrate comprehensive market knowledge.
