Ok to recruit for junior summer with implied offer from sophomore SA?

I have a sophomore investment banking internship for summer 2022, with the expectation to come back in 2023. I am wondering how it is viewed to recruit for summer 2023 given I have this implied junior year offer. Should I recruit quietly?

I also qualify for diversity programs but I know banks will oftentimes put pictures of their participants on their website/LinkedIn, and I’m wondering if this would be a slap in the face to my current bank? For what it’s worth my bank said they understand some people won’t come back next summer but I don’t know what to make of that.

I am a non target male if that helps.

Definitely recruit if you want something else for Junior internship. I doubt the firm would post a picture anytime before you start this summer. The only downside is if you burn the bridge with this summer's firm, but it doesn't really matter as long as you get something better for next year.

Side note: Most people do it. You have a huge upper hand by having something for your sophomore internship and it’s a big piece to get something pretty good for Junior Year.

interested as well^ if I got a sophomore SA from tier 1 BB. Given return offer is not 100% guaranteed for my sophomore SA, I'm considering if should do Junior recruiting -  what firms should I target for junior SA recruiting? Top EB/GS /Buy-side in NY? Or is it worthwhile for me to apply to other BB?

I think you should 100% do it - you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I got a soph SA position at a BB and thought I was just gonna coast on the two summers there and not have to think of recruiting. Spoke to some friends and they convinced me to re recruit so I narrowed my list down to 3-4 firms I would love to work for, gave it a shot, and now I’m joining a top EB next summer.

It was such a chill process when you already know you have a backup so I wasn’t really stressing about interviews or superdays - which I think worked to my advantage. Worst case, you can always choose to not accept an offer but you can’t go back in time and try to re recruit.

Thanks so much and that's really helpful! If you don't mind sharing - wondering if you'd have any suggestions about what types of firms should I target?

Im in a good IB group at a BB (not GS/MS/JPM) that I’ve been enjoying but wasn’t aligning with my long term career goals. I knew that if I was going to re-recruit I was going to shoot for top groups at top firms only - I wasn’t going to lateral to something I considered equivalent, I would only “upgrade”

So, I decided to re recruit for firms and groups like Ares DL / EVR M&A / PJT RSSG / BX PE. Instead of shooting my shot with every firm, I was a lot more deliberate and targeted with how I chose to recruit
