PE recruiting under OPT

Hi everyone. Looking for some advice. I am a first year analyst equivalent at MBB with experience in PEG/PIPE/PEPI. I just got word that I wasn’t selected for the H1B lottery. I am dead set on recruiting for PE ideally targetting ‘26 or ‘27. I have good relationships with HHs but they’ve mentioned that without an H1B my options are very limited.

I am looking for some advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation and/or know a little about recruiting while in OPT(STEM if relevant). Any helpful information on firms open to this situation, things to potentially look for in firms or even advice on recruiting for PE in London when US based are super helpful.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

  1. Recruiting on OPT Without H1B:

    • Recruiting for PE while on OPT can be challenging, as many firms prefer candidates with H1B or green card status. However, having STEM OPT (which extends your OPT validity to three years) can provide some flexibility.
    • Some smaller PE firms may be more open to taking the risk of hiring candidates on OPT, especially if you have a strong background and can demonstrate your value during interviews.
  2. Strategies to Improve Your Chances:

    • Educate Headhunters: Make sure headhunters understand that there is minimal risk in hiring you while on OPT. Highlight your eligibility for STEM OPT and the three attempts you have for the H1B lottery.
    • Target Specific Firms: Focus on firms that have a history of hiring international candidates or are known to sponsor visas. Larger firms (e.g., UMM/MF) may have the resources to sponsor, but some smaller firms might also be open to it if they see strong potential in you.
    • Timing: Consider delaying your PE recruiting to your second or third year as an analyst. This gives you additional chances at the H1B lottery and more time to build experience and relationships.
  3. Exploring International Options:

    • London or Toronto: If the US market proves too restrictive, consider recruiting for PE roles in London or Toronto. London, in particular, is a common destination for international candidates, but firms there may favor European citizenship for easier transfers. Toronto could also be an option, especially if you have Canadian ties or eligibility.
    • Networking: Build connections with headhunters and professionals in these markets to understand the nuances of recruiting internationally.
  4. Leverage Your Experience:

    • Your background in PEG/PIPE/PEPI at MBB is a strong asset. Highlight your deal experience, diligence skills, and any exposure to sourcing or evaluating opportunities. These are valuable talking points during interviews and can set you apart from other candidates.
  5. Additional Tips:

    • Be Persistent: Some firms may initially hesitate, but persistence and a strong track record can help you break through.
    • Consider Off-Cycle Recruiting: Off-cycle recruiting may offer more flexibility and less competition compared to the on-cycle process.

While the path may be more challenging without an H1B, focusing on firms open to international candidates, leveraging your STEM OPT, and exploring international markets can help you navigate this situation effectively.
