Qualifications vs. Connections?

I recently interviewed for a position in a group that one of my good buddies works in. He and I used to work together before he left for this current job. I have been told that the company is now evaluating between myself and one other applicant. The other candidate has more direct experience. However, based on my own background I would have no difficulty (at least in my mind) doing the job as well.

In a situation like this, is an employer more likely to weight the relationship with my friend, knowing that we work well together and that his background (similar to mine) was found to be a good fit, or the fact that the other candidate has a stronger background in terms of qualifications?

No one is going to be able to answer that for you unless the guy making the decision is on WSO.

A lot of things would come in to play, obviously.

First, whether or not your buddy is as awesome there as you believe him to be. Second, whether or not your buddy vouched for you enough to warrant taking someone with less experience. Third, whether the guy making the hiring decision likes your buddy. Fourth, even if he likes your buddy whether or not he cares about your friend's opinion. Fifth, whether or not the other guy has a connection at the firm you do not know about. Sixth, whether or not you would work for less money than the other guy. Or whether salary is a determining factor for the firm.

The list could go on and on, but in all honesty, you seem to be in a great position to receive the offer especially if your buddy is well respected and does a good job there.

Best of luck
