Question about employment

I interned for a small boutique firm, but it was informal, unpaid, never had my W2 processed. I listed it on my resume as an internship.

I'm now completing the disclosures/ background for an offer at a BB firm. Do I need to list that internship? I only ask because I know for a fact that they never formally filed anything and I don't want to get them in trouble or anything. Like I said, it was unpaid and technically on a voulenteer basis.

Thanks

  1. I volunteered once and put it on my resume. That volunteer gig also panned out into an internship later on and I used the guy I worked for as a reference (and still do, guy is awesome). Call the gig what it was 'volunteer [insert job function like analyst, assistant, coffee bitch].

  2. If you haven't graduated just leave it blank. Some anal douche might see you adding information where it isn't necessary as not being able to follow instructions or some bullshit like that.

Good luck

This happened to me. I still put the experience on the background check disclosure forms. Just expect to get a call/email from the background check folks saying, "we cannot verify your employment with company X." At which point, you'll say you were an unpaid intern and presumably are not in HR's database - just give the background check company your supervisor's contact info and you should be fine (name, title, phone, email).

Remember, background checks are usually outsourced. These companies just call HR and verify date of employment, salary, and eligibility for rehire.

I'll do what I can to help ya'll. But, the game's out there, and it's play or get played.
