Recruit again next year?

tldr: currently a non-diversity sophomore at HYPS; failed to land an offer this year for many reasons. As much as I blame diversity recruiting and what not, it’s probably my fault: I didn’t network in time and by the time i figured out technicals, it was too late. I’ve learned a lot this recruiting cycle and think I would actually have a shot next year. To clarify, I would either delay graduation/pursue a coterminal master’s degree as my reason for staying in school another year.

For current bankers, how does this look? If I interviewed this year, and assuming I didn’t leave a terrible impression, would it look bad to try again next year? Would I get automatically turned down?

Option 1: keep recruiting. There still might be spots open. You never know(DB, Nomura etc)

Option 2: delay a semester of graduation and recruit for SA again.

Option 3: Recruit for full-time while graduating on time

Option 4: go to a msf program and recruit for SA/FT

You could do option 2 and 3 at the same time but you need to get the timing right and play a good game. Obviously option 1 is the best and option 4 is the worst. But I think with your background you should totally be fine.

There are a lot of spots left. You didn't miss recruiting as much as it seems like that to you right now. I bet 30% of positions are still open. Keep consistent and you can definitely still land something. If you are worried about prestige, I'd almost rather take a less prestigious offer as a Junior internship and try to recruit over somewhere else FT. That can be debated though. Also, the majority of competition is gone now too so it gets easier and easier to get an offer.

how should i go about considering trade offs? at this point like i can either keep recruiting for IB or go full on prepping for MBB consulting happening in July. i’m worried that if i don’t cut my losses with IB now that i’m gonna end up with neither IB or consulting

It really depends on what you want to do longer term and where you skills are. Landing a banking offer is different than landing a consulting offer. Maybe you are more built for consulting and it will lend itself better to your future goals. Maybe if you couldn’t land a banking internship, you have an even lower chance of landing a non-diversity consulting gig. Not sure where you are on that spectrum but you shouldn’t be so quick to jump ship unless you literally have no clue what you want to do.

i totally understand that extra year might not be worth it. but assuming I’m gonna go with that choice, how does it look to firms I’ve already interviewed with this year?
