Reneging Offer Hours After?

I realize this is a beaten to death topic already - so very quickly - would the "potential reputation ramifications" for reneging an offer hours later be any less than say weeks after ?

I've been able to push my first offer a couple days further to the morning of the day I am expecting to receive a second offer, but can't be sure obviously. Worst case I'm thinking of signing in the morning and reneging later that same day if the offer comes in.

Could be even worse, but seeking opinions.

Asset Management type roles.

Thanks

Just sign in the afternoon - no need to renege unless it's necessary. Just make sure to arrange your schedule so you can fax the signed papers back within the hour or so.

That being said, if the offer comes after you've signed the papers, I would wait a bit so it's not so sudden and that you've given significant thought to the decision. 1-2 weeks, over the phone, very polite about it.

Just tell the place that you're waiting on that you have an offer outstanding and that there's a deadline for you to respond. If they want you, they'll clarify their position quickly enough. I've never done this with an offer, but I've done it to speed up the interview process, and it worked gangbusters.
