I work in consulting, and have recently received an offer to join another firm. I am away at a client site right now, and my boss is in a different office. Under normal circumstances, the best way to resign would be to speak to her in person with a resignation letter in hand. Unfortunately, this will not be possible. What's the best way to handle this?

Will you be back in the office on Friday or any time in the near future? Doing it in person is the best way to go, you want to make your transition as smooth as possible without burning any bridges. Are you giving notice or bolting as soon as you give your boss the news?
Do NOT quit while traveling.
Force yourself back to the office - doesn't matter how, tell them you have an urgent personal affair (true) and resign in person. Doing otherwise is 1) absolutely dick - you're not Cortez, don't burn your ships 2) a dumb move unless you're really looking forward to blowing money on a ticket home.
Just re-read and saw that your boss is in a different office - no biggie, would still recommend being at YOUR home office because it's YOUR HR that's going to stop by about 5 minutes after you call and ask you to pack your shit. When you leave one consulting firm for another, let me promise you you'll be escorted out within minutes of making that public.
Actually, one last note on that point - even if you want to be gone from your current firm yesterday, would recommend giving 1-2 weeks notice - if they hustle you out the door because you're a compromised resource, they owe you pay for that notice period.
