Resume Help - Networking a lot lately
Hey Guys,
I was wondering if you could help me out. I've been networking a lot lately, and a few contacts have asked me to forward my resume. My question is, I just got a job that I started in late may, (not finance related) is it worth puting this new job / description on my resume? Mind you, I've only been there a little over a month. Also, at what point is good to a job description to your resume? (6 mos., 1 yr, etc.) Any info would be great.
Once you start a position you can include it on your resume, and as you perform valuable/relevant to IB tasks, definitely include them on your resume - that's a pretty quick answer to your question.
To your first question, it really depends on the type of internship to which you are referring. Although it is not finance related, it can still be relevant - consulting, ops, accounting, etc can all be tweaked to appear very relevant to the skill set necessary in IB (analytical, quant, attention to detail, leadership, team work, etc). If, however, you are working in a fast food shop, or are a bar tender, for example, that is not terribly relevant, and doesn't need to be included in your resume (instead just use it as a means of earning some extra income as you search for a more relevant internship/position). Essentially you want to showcase as much relevant experience as you can, but relevant is the key word - you don't want to give a mixed message as to what you want to do.
Thanks for the responses. Sorry about that last sentence. To clarify, I'm asking how long should someone be working at certain place before they put in on their resume.
The guys I'm networking with are mostly FX traders. I don't really have any direct exposure to trading, except for a senior thesis I wrote about globalization and FX trading. Most of my internship experiences were in CMBS / Securitization, which isn't really helping right now. I graduated this past dec. and recently took a job at an insurance co. this past May just to have a steady income. So I’m trying to figure out how I should make my resume more trader friendly and if it is even worth putting down this new gig....
Since you've graduated already, it is worth it to put down the position to show that you are currently working. That said, you should definitely try to craft your experience description to appear relevant to the positions you are applying for as best you can - focus on any analytical aspects, any documentation drafting aspects, and any opportunities where you've stepped up and taken charge/made an impact on the group, just to mention a few potential points of focus. I know it'll be tough, but it's better than being unemployed.
