Risk Analyst... comp? lateral?
A quick background first: I'm from a non-target, and got an off-cycle internship in risk at a BB in APAC after grad. So I flew all the way here, put up with an intern salary, and was converted to a FT analyst recently. What they're offering me now though is kind of ridiculous, even for risk, so I was hoping to find out if this is the norm in Asia?
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I had heard that (at least back in North America) 1st risk analysts get paid a signing bonus and around the same base as those in FO, just much less year-end bonus. Instead, I was offered no signing bonus, a salary that was lower than what an entry level big 4 accountant would make, and am working 11-12 hours/days routinely with no meal/taxi reimbursements.
I'm pretty shocked and disappointed, but there's nothing I can do except to accept the offer. Given that living expenses are so high here, I don't understand why this is... or is it just my bank? It's a BB though, granted not GS/JP, but still. Can anyone in APAC or risk in general comment/confirm this? I like the team here and think risk is interesting, but it's pretty hard to swallow that I basically lost 30K+ in income in my 1st year.
Update: Some questions
Do risk lateral hires work the same way as IB, in the sense that you move after 2 years? Not sure if there's a standard for risk like there is for other roles.
Would going for a credit rating agency as a junior analyst/research assistant be a good idea? I was thinking (1) you could always come back to risk, and (2) this somewhat counts as credit research experience? Not sure how this would be regarded though vs. just staying in a BB doing risk.
Thanks so much for your help!
If you're in commercial, 5/60, and 10/70 for institutional. But that's US
Thanks. Yeah that's what I've heard as well... I'm in IB credit risk though, so I guess it would be on par with the institutional one?
What type of risk do you work on? Is it market risk?
I work in counterparty credit risk... actually had an offer for MRC but turned it down because I like credit more haha
