So What's Out There?
Hey all, I was hoping to get some advice on Finance and the industry.
Ok, bit of a background first. I'm 25, and only got into Finance as Plan B. I was really into Physics right up until University, and despite all my enthusiasm about the subject, it just really wasn't what I thought it would be (and the paycheck sucks). So then I turned to Plan B which was to make as much money as is humanly possible (lol, I know). I liked that one Personal Finance class I'd taken prior to Uni and I liked the idea of investing to receive a compound return, so I decided to take the plunge and go for a Finance degree.
I'm now in my last year of Uni with a low GPA (2.5) and literally have no idea what's out there in terms of jobs. Yeah, I know, I should've gotten ahead somehow or whatever, but life doesn't always work out that way. I've always had "investments" or "trading" in mind, so there's that. I have some experience there with various instruments as well, but no formal research experience or anything.
I'm open to all suggestions. I'm just wondering what's out there in terms of jobs/careers/self-starter possibilities, etc. A run down of that stuff would be awesome. Thanks, all. :)
Hey Tandem, I'd start in our FAQs (at menu at top of screen) and then if you have more detialed questions I'm sure we can help.
Thanks, Patrick
Ok, I've had some time to think about my question to make it more precise. I have first narrowed down my interests to a few areas:
PWM Risk Management Financial Advisor
Advice specific to the Montreal area would be quite welcome, but any general advice is cool too. I'm basically interested in what the competition is like, what employers would be looking for in candidates, and where to look/what firms would be great. I assume they will be looking for a CFA and other similar accreditations? Etc.
Finally, my original area of interest was trading, but I've come to view this as a fairly risky choice for a job. If anyone knows of any way to get experience that does not involve paying a prop firm, I'm all ears!
Thanks!
You're the classic dumbo who chooses a major to chase money, gets a fxcked up gpa and waits until the very end to start actually figuring out what he's going to do with the degree...nice job.
you really had to bump a 4 month old thread to post that? how is doing a physics major chasing money?
