Starting Internships Late?

Hey monkeys,

So I was lucky enough to land a BB PB summer analyst spot but Im currently studying abroad and Im struggling getting my professors to let me take my exams early. Im currently scheduled to be done June 10th while the training begins May 29th. Should I even consider asking my internship if I could start a week early? And would missing the training be a major impediment to my success this summer?
Thanks in advance!

Did you mention this conflict during your interview? When offered a position, they outline the specific dates and generally ask if you have any foreseen conflicts. Did you mention anything?

Honestly, this is not very good. Interns are a dime a dozen, and unless there is something amazingly special and unique and unattainable about you (there probably isn't), they can very easily replace you. It is your job to bend over backwards for them, not the other way around.

More likely than not, they are not going to train you some other time. That takes up way too many resources, and the people who do the training are actually important. Your best hope, IMO, is to offer solutions to the issue. The only thing I can think of is that they send you the material you will need to know, and you self study.

They wouldn't spend an entire week training you if it wasn't important. It is very important (in my experience, at least). Your best hope is to speak with your professors more.

Big companies are very strict about start dates. If government clearance is absolutely essential for your particular role, I'm guessing HR will still put you through general training and then assign to you to ad-hoc projects until your clearance is granted.

The most I have heard of is starting/finishing a week late. I recall some SAs who were coming from quarter-system schools had finals they could not miss the week after training. That being said, HR let them go to training and delay their actual desk start by a week. Unfortunately, I know two guys from my year who did not receive return offers because they missed a significant portion of their internships due to similar circumstances. I think they had some kind of Visa clearance problems and ended up starting 3 weeks into the internship. Their programs were not extended and neither were given return offers (mainly because they were so behind/became lost relative to other SAs).

3 weeks would be equal to no return offer... Missing 2 weeks is pushing itself. Missing 1 week would be fine if you hauled ass and did REALLY good work.

You can miss training, but actual desk time would kill you. Max missing 1 week on desk is what I meant by 2 weeks is pushing it. training is typically entire first week.

idk but feel free to strongly push that "I'll work till the day before the start of my classes to prove my commitment"

whenever you get to the desk, apologize to your teammates and ACE IT... thats the only way you will convince the bankers to hire you

lol ask HR ASAP - if it's really their fault maybe they'll give you sympathy but honestly I wouldn't hope for much. You're missing half the summer, of course it'll look bad for FT.

You can't purchase an express clearance?

I can't. .US immigration does not allow express clearance. Have you seen any SA who joined late but still managed to do really well?

Thanks!

I don't think this will be an issue for you. Interns are just... interns. You are really not expected much. Sure you're going to be behind in catching up with your peers, but work hard and catch up ground fast. You can also ask your group/HR to see if they can extend your internship for a few more weeks for the lost ground, though this is HIGHLY unlikely since hiring decisions are made pretty much right after the interns leave.

This could be your golden opportunity to show your group how badly you want the job. Do the best you can, the rest is out of your control. HR can't help you because they don't ultimately decide who gets offers or not.

I see. Thanks a lot! That sounds really encouraging. I am really hungry for this job, and I will show it!! Hopefully above scenario would be a worst-case scenario, and I hope that wouldn't happen!

Talk to one of the higher up interviewers you had and ask if you can work without papers in the meantime. I feel like HR would shoot this down immediately if you approach them first, so I would approach one of your interviewers first.

I definitely understand your issue - I am an international student too.

Wait..since it is a SA opportunity shouldn't you be applying for CPT - which actually takes 2weeks to process?

If this makes it better, so far from my friends who are International, their OPT process took 4weeks max (the 90 days is usually a safety and not a guarantee) but I am guessing since it is this late, it might take a bit longer.

I would advice you contact the interview ASAP as suggested to let them know though

"Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection demoralizes you"

You should tell HR immediately. Keep in mind that the whole idea behind the BB SA programs are that they are specifically structured so that can train you, test you, and then evaluate you to see if they want to bring you on full-time. Internships last from 8-12 weeks and you would be missing nearly half of that, one week being training which is arguably the most important part of the internship. Add on top of that, BB over hire interns so that they can weed out some at the end and keep the best of the bunch. I don't mean to scare you or be a let down, and your situation is unfortunate, but there is a chance that when you talk to HR they may rescind your offer. Hope it all works out for you though; good luck.
