Still can’t find anything for sophomore summer 2019...

I’m a current sophomore at a non-ivy target and am having a lot of trouble finding a sophomore summer 2019 gig (mainly looking at things related to IB/PE, and AM). I also had a relevant freshman summer internship doing PWM at a MM level bank. I’ve sent out hundreds of apps, have had maybe around 10 interviews (2 of which being boutique IB shops) and haven’t been able to land anything.

I’ve reached out to almost all local boutiques in my area and the rest of my interviews were for places I couldn’t even be in for the summer as I would be losing money from paying housing.

With 2020 SA accelerating, I’m getting real discouraged finding something for my sophomore summer. Any advice or insight or others in the same position?

If you go to a target and are getting interviews, the link that's broken seems like interview performance. How have you been interviewing - do you get the offer and turn it down because of the relocation cost, or are you often not getting the offer at all?

If it makes you feel any better, I was in your shoes until about a week ago and a lot of shops will still recruit into early spring for sophomore jobs - keep applying, networking, and getting comments on your resume.

It may be very well my interviewing performance tbh—get really nervous and blank

Honestly I did the same looking for sophomore summer, starting in the summer of freshman year... came up with nothing until February, signed my junior offer very shortly after my sophomore offer. Banks recruiting for 2020 understand that you might not have a sophomore gig right now.

Keep doing what you're doing and it might just end up being after the holidays. I would email people/network your way in over applying online - most portals will ding you for your grad date unless it explicitly is a sophomore internship, so most of those are a waste of time (keep applying to them, but know that's why you're getting dinged)

I’m a non-target state schooler, although we do a have surprisingly strong alumni base. I sent out around 200 emails over the summer and received a couple verbal offers for unpaid pe/institutional am internships.

I eventually got a boutique internship in NY, after I figured I had built up a few good leads around other parts of the country (flexibility on where you can live helps immensely). If you make the effort to try and get to know some people and get informational interviews, I’d be surprised if nothing materializes.

I’m a sophomore too. Good luck man

How did you structure your email? What do you think helped you the most in getting verbal offers? I'm in the UK and we don't network as hard as you hence the inquiry. Thank you in advance.

follow KingColonize's advice and keep up the grind.. societies, other extracurriculars, high gpa, networking, studying outside of uni (e.g. rosenbaum) and it should pay off. Also, darthstrader's advice seems on point too. If you are getting interviews but not moving on, it may be your responses.

I'm in a UK non-target with a great WM internship & first (equivalent to 3.7-3.8 or 4.0 depending on who you ask) and I can't even get 2nd round interviews. Point is, lots of people are in your boat. Don't get anxiety because some kids on WSO are posting success stories already. The successful ones talk the most here, there's plenty of unheard stories.

I wouldn't worry too much for your sophomore summer. I only got my sophomore summer internship at a boutique growth equity shop in early May and didn't have too much trouble interviewing for Junior IB internships.

You should understand that boutiques only know their hiring needs closer to the summer, so there will definitely be more opportunities that are available closer to the summer time.
